How to Read a Megaways Paytable: A Beginner-Friendly Guide

How to Read a Megaways Paytable: A Beginner-Friendly Guide

Mateo Castillo09/01/202609/19/2026

Megaways slots can look confusing when you open one for the first time. The reels keep changing size, the number of winning ways moves from spin to spin, and the paytable often contains more information than a traditional slot.

Learning How to Read a Megaways Paytable makes everything much easier. Instead of guessing what each symbol or feature does, you can quickly understand symbol payouts, Wilds, Scatters, cascading wins, multipliers, and bonus conditions.

The goal is not to predict results, but to understand exactly how the game calculates them.

Start With the Basic Megaways Layout

A traditional slot normally uses a fixed number of reels and rows. Megaways games are different because the number of visible symbols on individual reels can change.

Many classic Megaways configurations use six reels with up to seven symbols per reel. When all six reels show seven positions, the calculation can reach 117,649 ways to win: 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7.

Big Time Gaming titles such as Max Megaways use this familiar maximum, although some newer Megaways games use expanded configurations.

This is why the number displayed above or below the reels can change constantly.

Do not confuse that number with a traditional payline count. It describes possible symbol combinations across qualifying adjacent reels.

Check the Regular Symbol Payouts First

The next part of the paytable usually shows ordinary paying symbols. These are commonly divided into low-value and premium symbols.

Card ranks such as 9, 10, J, Q, K, and A often occupy the lower end of the paytable, while themed objects or characters usually offer higher values. However, every title is different, so never assume a symbol has the same value simply because it looks important.

Suppose a paytable shows a gem paying 0.5x for three matching symbols, 1.5x for four, 4x for five, and 10x for six. If you bet $1 and land a qualifying six-reel combination, one winning way would contribute 10x the stake according to that game’s stated rules.

The important detail is that several winning combinations may exist simultaneously because the same symbol can appear multiple times on seperate reels.

Understand How Ways to Win Are Counted

This is one of the most important sections when learning how Megaways payouts work.

In many Megaways titles, matching symbols must begin on the leftmost reel and continue across consecutive reels. Their vertical position usually does not need to match.

Imagine the first three reels contain:

  • Reel 1: two matching gems
  • Reel 2: three matching gems
  • Reel 3: two matching gems

That can create 2 × 3 × 2 = 12 winning combinations before any additional matching reels are considered.

This explains why a small-looking symbol payout can sometimes produce a larger total win. The paytable value may apply to each qualifying combination rather than only once.

Always check the individual game’s rules because special reels or unusual layouts can modify the standard calculation.

Read the Wild Symbol Rules Carefully

Wilds generally substitute for normal paying symbols, but their exact behaviour can vary considerably.

Some games use an ordinary Wild that simply completes combinations. Others introduce stacked Wilds, expanding Wilds, sticky Wilds, or multiplier Wilds.

For example, The Dog House Megaways includes Wild symbols with multipliers and bonus modes involving Sticky Wilds or Raining Wilds.

That demonstrates why knowing that a symbol is “Wild” is not enough – you need to know exactly what happens when it participates in a win.

Pay attention to restrictions too. A Wild may substitute for regular symbols but not for Scatter or special bonus icons.

Missing that small rule can make the payoutt appear confusing when a spin is settled.

Identify Scatter and Bonus Requirements

Scatter symbols work differently from regular paying icons.

Rather than requiring consecutive reels, Scatters often trigger a feature based on the total number appearing during one spin. The paytable or game information panel should explain how many are required.

In Bonanza, for example, special GOLD Scatter symbols are connected to the Free Spins feature. During that feature, winning reactions can also increase the multiplier.

Another Megaways title may require three, four, or more Scatters. Extra Scatters might award additional free spins or unlock an enhanced feature.

Never rely on rules remembered from another game. Even two Megaways slots from the same developer may use completely different bonus conditions.

Look for Cascades, Reactions, or Tumbles

Many Megaways slots combine variable reels with a cascading mechanic.

After a winning combination is paid, the symbols involved may disappear. New symbols then fall or move into the empty positions, creating another opportunity for a winning combination without requiring a new paid spin.

Different developers use terms such as cascades, reactions, avalanches, or tumbles for similar systems.

Pragmatic Play’s Spin & Score Megaways, for example, removes winning symbols through its tumble mechanic and replaces them with new symbols.

Check whether reel heights remain unchanged during the sequence or can change again. That small detail can affect the number of available Megaways during each occurence.

Check Multiplier Rules in Base and Bonus Play

Multipliers deserve their own section because their behaviour is often different during bonus rounds.

A game might begin a free-spin multiplier at 1x and increase it after every successful cascade. Another may attach multipliers to specific Wild symbols.

Vegas Megaways, for example, includes a win multiplier during Free Spins that starts at one and rises after reactions.

When reading the paytable, ask three questions: what activates the multiplier, when does it increase, and when does it reset?

A multiplier that resets after each spin behaves very differently from one that continues growing for the entire bonus round.

Check RTP, Volatility, and Maximum Win Separately

These statistics are often displayed near the paytable but describe different things.

RTP is a theoretical long-term percentage calculated across a very large number of game rounds. It does not tell you what will happen in a short session.

Volatility describes the general distribution of payouts. A higher-volatility slot may concentrate more of its return into less frequent but potentially larger wins.

Maximum win shows the highest payout allowed under the game’s mathematical model, commonly expressed as a multiple of the stake.

These numbers should never be treated as a prediction for the next spin. They are better used to understand the game’s overall design and risk profile.

Knowing How to Read a Megaways Paytable turns a visually complicated slot into a much clearer set of rules. Focus on symbol values, ways to win, Wild and Scatter behaviour, cascades, multipliers, RTP, and feature conditions.

Before using real money, open the game’s information screen or demo mode and compare each rule with what appears on the reels.

How Many Scatters Are Needed to Trigger Free Spins? Key Rules

You can often recognise a scatter symbol by its word “Scatter,” glowing border, or connection to the slot’s main theme. What is less obvious is how many of these icons must appear before the bonus actually begins.

The answer is not identical across every game. While three is a popular trigger, some slots require different quantities, reel positions, or collection conditions.

This guide explains how to find the exact requirement instead of guessing. It also covers the difference between scatters and bonus symbols, how game versions can vary, and why seeing two symbols repeatedly does not indicate that the missing one is about to land.

Start With the Paytable

The paytable is the fastest place to confirm the trigger. Open the menu and find the section covering special symbols or free spins.

It should identify the scatter icon and state the minimum number required. The same section may explain additional awards for landing four or five.

Rules relating to the number and type of tokens needed for a feature should be made available before a player commits to gambling.

Check Where the Symbols Must Land

Do not look only at the quantity. Some games accept qualifying scatters anywhere on the visible grid, while others require them on specific reels.

A common example is one symbol appearing on reels one, three, and five. Three icons landing elsewhere might not satisfy the trigger.

The paytable may show a diagram instead of describing the placement in a sentence. Review every page of the feature explanation carefully.

Separate Scatters From Bonus Symbols

“Scatter” and “bonus” are sometimes used interchangeably, but they do not always perform the same function.

A scatter might award an immediate payout and activate free spins. A bonus symbol may open a pick-and-win screen instead. Another special icon could collect prizes without triggering any separate feature.

Identify each symbol by its official name and rules rather than assuming that all colourful icons contribute to the same bonus.

Review the Number of Awarded Spins

Finding the minimum trigger is only the first step. Check how the reward changes when more symbols appear.

Three scatters might provide ten spins, while four offer fifteen and five provide twenty-five. Another game could keep the number of rounds unchanged but increase a multiplier.

A higher scatter count does not guarantee a profitable feature. It only activates the reward described in the game’s mathematical rules.

Look at the Retrigger Conditions

The requirement during the feature may differ from the base game. Three scatters might be needed to start the bonus, but only two may be required to add more spins.

Check how many rounds are added and whether retriggers are unlimited. Some games place a maximum on the total bonus length.

Approved testing can examine feature activation, special events, free spins, and the accuracy of their related payouts.

Confirm the Exact Game Version

The same slot title can sometimes appear in different markets or software configurations. Although its basic artwork may remain familiar, certain rules or mathematical settings can vary.

Read the information inside the active game instead of relying entirely on a review, screenshot, or video. Regulators may require online games and their RNG systems to complete sufficient testing before release in a regulated market.

The active player-facing rules are the most relevant source for the version you are viewing.

Ignore Near-Miss Myths

Two scatter symbols may create suspense, especially when the final reel slows down. However, a near miss cannot reveal the next outcome.

RNG systems are tested to ensure results are unpredictable and do not contain bias toward particular outcomes.

The software does not owe the player a bonus after several unsuccessful rounds. Continuing or increasing the stake because the feature feels close only exposes more money to random results.

Use Demo Mode to Learn the Feature

A demo game can help you locate the paytable, recognise scatters, and observe how the feature is presented without placing a cash wager.

Practice credits have no real financial value, so demo mode should be used for learning rather than estimating future returns. A successful practice session does not predict real-money results.

When playing is legal and age-appropriate, set money and time limits before starting. Reality-check tools can also help users monitor how long they have been playing.

The number of scatters needed for free spins varies by game. Three is common, but the feature may require two, four, five, specific reel positions, or an entirely different collection system.

Retrigger requirements can also differ from the original activation rules. Open the active game’s paytable and check the symbol, quantity, placement, reward, and retrigger conditions before playing.

Do not rely on memories from another slot or interpret repeated near misses as evidence that a feature is due. Use demo mode to understand unfamiliar mechanics and keep every real-money session within predetermined time and spending limits.
