How to Read a Megaways Paytable: A Beginner-Friendly Guide

How to Read a Megaways Paytable: A Beginner-Friendly Guide

Mateo Castillo09/01/202609/19/2026

Megaways slots can look confusing when you open one for the first time. The reels keep changing size, the number of winning ways moves from spin to spin, and the paytable often contains more information than a traditional slot.

Learning How to Read a Megaways Paytable makes everything much easier. Instead of guessing what each symbol or feature does, you can quickly understand symbol payouts, Wilds, Scatters, cascading wins, multipliers, and bonus conditions.

The goal is not to predict results, but to understand exactly how the game calculates them.

Start With the Basic Megaways Layout

A traditional slot normally uses a fixed number of reels and rows. Megaways games are different because the number of visible symbols on individual reels can change.

Many classic Megaways configurations use six reels with up to seven symbols per reel. When all six reels show seven positions, the calculation can reach 117,649 ways to win: 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7.

Big Time Gaming titles such as Max Megaways use this familiar maximum, although some newer Megaways games use expanded configurations.

This is why the number displayed above or below the reels can change constantly.

Do not confuse that number with a traditional payline count. It describes possible symbol combinations across qualifying adjacent reels.

Check the Regular Symbol Payouts First

The next part of the paytable usually shows ordinary paying symbols. These are commonly divided into low-value and premium symbols.

Card ranks such as 9, 10, J, Q, K, and A often occupy the lower end of the paytable, while themed objects or characters usually offer higher values. However, every title is different, so never assume a symbol has the same value simply because it looks important.

Suppose a paytable shows a gem paying 0.5x for three matching symbols, 1.5x for four, 4x for five, and 10x for six. If you bet $1 and land a qualifying six-reel combination, one winning way would contribute 10x the stake according to that game’s stated rules.

The important detail is that several winning combinations may exist simultaneously because the same symbol can appear multiple times on seperate reels.

Understand How Ways to Win Are Counted

This is one of the most important sections when learning how Megaways payouts work.

In many Megaways titles, matching symbols must begin on the leftmost reel and continue across consecutive reels. Their vertical position usually does not need to match.

Imagine the first three reels contain:

  • Reel 1: two matching gems
  • Reel 2: three matching gems
  • Reel 3: two matching gems

That can create 2 × 3 × 2 = 12 winning combinations before any additional matching reels are considered.

This explains why a small-looking symbol payout can sometimes produce a larger total win. The paytable value may apply to each qualifying combination rather than only once.

Always check the individual game’s rules because special reels or unusual layouts can modify the standard calculation.

Read the Wild Symbol Rules Carefully

Wilds generally substitute for normal paying symbols, but their exact behaviour can vary considerably.

Some games use an ordinary Wild that simply completes combinations. Others introduce stacked Wilds, expanding Wilds, sticky Wilds, or multiplier Wilds.

For example, The Dog House Megaways includes Wild symbols with multipliers and bonus modes involving Sticky Wilds or Raining Wilds.

That demonstrates why knowing that a symbol is “Wild” is not enough – you need to know exactly what happens when it participates in a win.

Pay attention to restrictions too. A Wild may substitute for regular symbols but not for Scatter or special bonus icons.

Missing that small rule can make the payoutt appear confusing when a spin is settled.

Identify Scatter and Bonus Requirements

Scatter symbols work differently from regular paying icons.

Rather than requiring consecutive reels, Scatters often trigger a feature based on the total number appearing during one spin. The paytable or game information panel should explain how many are required.

In Bonanza, for example, special GOLD Scatter symbols are connected to the Free Spins feature. During that feature, winning reactions can also increase the multiplier.

Another Megaways title may require three, four, or more Scatters. Extra Scatters might award additional free spins or unlock an enhanced feature.

Never rely on rules remembered from another game. Even two Megaways slots from the same developer may use completely different bonus conditions.

Look for Cascades, Reactions, or Tumbles

Many Megaways slots combine variable reels with a cascading mechanic.

After a winning combination is paid, the symbols involved may disappear. New symbols then fall or move into the empty positions, creating another opportunity for a winning combination without requiring a new paid spin.

Different developers use terms such as cascades, reactions, avalanches, or tumbles for similar systems.

Pragmatic Play’s Spin & Score Megaways, for example, removes winning symbols through its tumble mechanic and replaces them with new symbols.

Check whether reel heights remain unchanged during the sequence or can change again. That small detail can affect the number of available Megaways during each occurence.

Check Multiplier Rules in Base and Bonus Play

Multipliers deserve their own section because their behaviour is often different during bonus rounds.

A game might begin a free-spin multiplier at 1x and increase it after every successful cascade. Another may attach multipliers to specific Wild symbols.

Vegas Megaways, for example, includes a win multiplier during Free Spins that starts at one and rises after reactions.

When reading the paytable, ask three questions: what activates the multiplier, when does it increase, and when does it reset?

A multiplier that resets after each spin behaves very differently from one that continues growing for the entire bonus round.

Check RTP, Volatility, and Maximum Win Separately

These statistics are often displayed near the paytable but describe different things.

RTP is a theoretical long-term percentage calculated across a very large number of game rounds. It does not tell you what will happen in a short session.

Volatility describes the general distribution of payouts. A higher-volatility slot may concentrate more of its return into less frequent but potentially larger wins.

Maximum win shows the highest payout allowed under the game’s mathematical model, commonly expressed as a multiple of the stake.

These numbers should never be treated as a prediction for the next spin. They are better used to understand the game’s overall design and risk profile.

Knowing How to Read a Megaways Paytable turns a visually complicated slot into a much clearer set of rules. Focus on symbol values, ways to win, Wild and Scatter behaviour, cascades, multipliers, RTP, and feature conditions.

Before using real money, open the game’s information screen or demo mode and compare each rule with what appears on the reels.

Wild Symbol Weighting: How It Changes Slot Hit Frequency

Wild Symbol Weighting: How It Changes Slot Hit Frequency

Mateo Castillo07/22/202608/13/2026

Wild symbols are easy to understand visually. They usually replace other paying symbols, helping incomplete combinations turn into wins. What players cannot see is the mathematical decision behind how often those wilds are allowed to appear.

That is where Wild Symbol Weighting becomes important. A slot designer can make a wild relatively common, extremely rare, restricted to particular reels, or available only during specific features. Each choice changes the number of possible winning outcomes and can influence hit frequency, expected return, and volatility.

Regulated RNG games must map random inputs to outcomes according to the game’s defined probabilities and paytable rather than changing those probabilities in response to previous wins or losses.

So the real question is not simply what a wild does. It is how its probability fits into the rest of the game.

What Does Wild Symbol Weighting Actually Mean?

In simplified mathematical terms, weighting describes how frequently one possible outcome appears relative to others.

Imagine a theoretical reel containing 100 weighted positions. If five positions effectively correspond to wild outcomes, the wild represents 5% of those positions in this simplified model.

Increase that number to ten and the chance of encountering a wild on that reel increases.

Real slot mathematics can use much more sophisticated outcome mappings, virtual reels, feature states, or other probability structures. The example is simply a convenient way to understand the concept.

The important idea is that the wild is not automatically equally likely to appear as every other symbol.

Its frequency is part of the game’s mathematical design.

UK Gambling Commission standards require random inputs to be mapped to outcomes in accordance with the relevant probabilities and paytables.

More Wilds Can Create More Winning Combinations

A standard wild usually substitutes for one or more ordinary paying symbols.

Starburst provides a straightforward real-world example: its expanding wild substitutes for paying symbols, covers an entire reel when activated, and can trigger a respin.

Why does substitution matter mathematically?

Imagine a three-reel winning combination requiring matching A symbols. Without wilds, one simplified outcome might need:

A + A + A

If a wild substitutes for A, additional qualifying arrangements become possible:

Wild + A + A
A + Wild + A
A + A + Wild

Depending on the rules, even combinations containing multiple wilds may qualify.

Increasing wild frequency therefore expands the set of reel outcomes capable of satisfying certain payout conditions.

That can raise hit frequency, although the exact effect depends on which reels contain wilds and what those wilds are permitted to substitute.

Reel Position Matters as Much as Wild Frequency

Simply counting wild symbols is not enough.

Imagine a five-reel slot where ordinary wins must start from the leftmost reel. A wild on Reel 1 may have much greater mathematical influence on hit frequency than the same wild appearing only on Reel 5.

Why?

A first-reel wild can participate in many possible starting combinations. A fifth-reel wild usually matters only when the preceding reels have already created most of a qualifying sequence.

Some commercial games intentionally restrict wild availability. Hotline 2, for example, allows its wilds only on specific middle reels, where they can expand when participating in wins.

This demonstrates why wild placement rules matter.

Two hypothetical games could use the same number of wild outcomes but achieve different hit frequencies simply because the distribtion across reels differs.

A Simple Probability Example Shows the Effect

Consider a highly simplified three-reel model.

Suppose an A symbol has a 20% probability on each reel and a wild has a 5% probability. Assume the wild can substitute for A.

Without wild substitution, the probability of A-A-A would be:

0.20 × 0.20 × 0.20 = 0.008

or 0.8%.

If either A or Wild qualifies at every position, the effective matching probability becomes 25% per reel:

0.25 × 0.25 × 0.25 = 0.015625

or about 1.56%.

The qualifying combination probability has nearly doubled.

Real slots cannot normally be calculated this easily because symbols and positions may not be independent, and different payout rules apply. Still, the example illustrates why Wild Symbol Weighting can influence hit frequency substantially.

A small change in wild probability may affect many combinations rather than one isolated payout.

Wild Weighting Must Be Balanced Against Payout Value

Adding more wilds sounds simple until expected value enters the picture.

If a wild makes winning combinations more common while all payout values remain unchanged, the game’s theoretical return could increase.

Game mathematicians therefore need to balance wild frequency against the rest of the pay model.

GLI explains that RTP can be calculated theoretically or through simulation, with mathematicians evaluating possible pay combinations against the game’s payout data. Large numbers of possible combinations may require simulator programs.

A simplified relationship is:

RTP = Σ (Outcome Probability × Outcome Payout)

If wild weighting increases the probablity of several paying outcomes, those increased probabilities feed directly into expected return.

Designers may compensate through symbol frequencies, payout values, bonus frequencies, or other variables while maintaining the intended RTP.

Hit Frequency and RTP Are Not the Same Thing

A higher frequency of wild-assisted wins does not necessarily mean a higher RTP.

Imagine two hypothetical slots, both returning 96% theoretically.

Game A produces many frequent wins worth around 0.2× to 1× the bet.

Game B produces fewer winning rounds but occasionally returns much larger prizes.

Their theoretical returns could be similar despite very different hit frequencies.

Wild weighting can help shape this distinction.

A game with relatively accessible substitution may produce frequent small combinations. Another might make its wilds rare but give them powerful expanding, multiplier, or persistent properties.

GLI defines RTP as the expected percentage of wagers returned to players over the long run, which is different from measuring how frequently an individual spin wins.

This is why players should not treat wild frequency as a shortcut for identifying a higher-return game.

Special Wilds Make the Calculation More Complex

Modern slots rarely stop at basic substitution.

Wilds can expand, move, stick to the grid, trigger respins, or carry multipliers.

Starburst’s expanding wild both substitutes and triggers another spin, meaning its expected value includes more than the immediate winning combination.

Funk Master takes another approach: its Dancing Wild can substitute for paying symbols and can move after participating in a cluster win as part of a larger Avalanche mechanic.

These features mean the value of a wild depends on what happens after it appears.

A simple substitute wild might influence only one evaluation. A moving or persistent wild can influence several.

Its weighting may therefore need to be lower because each individual occurence has more potential mathematical value.

Why Designers Cannot Simply Add More Wilds

More wilds can make a game feel active, but excessive substitution can create problems.

Winning combinations may become too frequent. Feature triggers could occur more often than intended. Cascades might continue longer, and high-value symbols could become easier to connect.

The resulting game may no longer match its target RTP or volatility.

Regulators also require games to present accurate information about rules and winning possibilities, while operators must monitor live RTP performance because implementation problems can cause games to overpay or underpay.

Wild weighting is therefore one element of a larger balacing exercise.

The best mathematical configuration is not necessarily the one with the most wilds. It is the one where wild frequency works coherently with payouts, features, and the intended risk profile.

Wild Symbol Weighting can influence slot hit frequency by changing how often substitution becomes available and how many losing arrangements can turn into qualifying combinations. Yet reel position, payout values, special wild behaviour, and RTP all matter too.

When analysing slot mathematics, consider not only what the wild does, but also how frequently and where the game allows it to appear.
